Gloomhaven is a collaborative game where players battle monsters and pursue their own personal goals. The game is designed to be played within a campaign where players will use the Scenario Book to tie together a series of adventures, unlocking new content as the game progresses. Each previously revealed scenario, however, can also be used as a self-contained game experience.

You choose your hero from the initial six available. Each hero has a dedicated deck of cards and each card has an initiative value and two halves: a higher one, usually with an attack action, a lower one, usually with a move. But the cards vary a lot from character to character and can contain spells, cures, upgrades, defenses, support, etc.

In each round, the players all play together two cards: they will use the upper half of one, the lower half of the other , in the desired order. Also for each type of monster, a card is revealed from a special pile and this card will define its initiative and behavior for the current round.

Each class has a unique set of abilities, so choosing which class is an important decision. When opening the game box for the first time, the Brute , Inventor , Spellweaver , Rogue , Rockheart and Mindthief classes are available. Many more classes will be unlocked as you progress through the game.

The narrative strands proceed parallel but somehow linked, intertwined in the fresco of a detailed world waiting to be discovered, which is created as players attach new stickers on the map, enter objects on the market, explore new roads. The legacy aspect is all in all negligible, it doesn't impact much on the game and the whole thing is absolutely replayable (or resellable) once the campaign is over.

In campaign mode , players form an official party of characters and take on a series of consecutive scenarios over the course of multiple gameplay sessions. This allows players to follow a narrative thread as they make decisions and explore a path shaped by their choices. A scenario can only be played in campaign mode if all group and global prerequisite milestones listed in the Scenario Book are active for the group. Also, once a scenario has been completed in campaign mode, it cannot be undertaken again in campaign mode by any other party .

it is strongly discouraged to undertake a scenario in self-concluded mode that the group has not yet faced in campaign mode.

Hand management is very important and strategic, bringing out a "mixed" nature of the game that mirrors American mechanics and German mechanics in what turns out to be a very varied and consistent game.
