In 1945, an unlikely alliance managed to tame the Nazi beast, as humanity's most devastating weapons brought the proud Japanese empire to its knees in a firestorm. Where many great powers once stood, now only two remained: the United States and the Soviet Union. The world had little time to recover before a new conflict loomed. Unlike the titanic wars of decades past, this conflict would be fought primarily not by soldiers and tanks, but by spies and politicians, scientists and intellectuals, artists and traitors.
Twilight Struggle is a two-player game that simulates the forty-five years of dance of intrigue, prestige, and the occasional flare-up of war between the Soviet Union and the United States. The whole world is the theater in which these two titans fought to save it according to their ideologies and their lifestyles.
The event cards cover a wide range of historical events, from the Arab-Israeli wars of 1948 and 1967, to Vietnam and the peace movement in the United States, to the Cuban Missile Crisis and other types of incidents that brought the world to the brink of a nuclear annihilation. The game subsystem reproduces the heavy prestige due to the Space Race as well as the Nuclear tension, with the possibility of the game ending in a nuclear war.
